What the Funk?

October 17, 2018

Hey Litties!

It's been a hot stinkin' minute! I know 🙃But, if you've been keeping up with me on Instagram, then you'll know that I've been in a funk. If you don't know what that is, a funk is just one of those extended bad moods that seem to be dragging out ridiculously, but you just can't seem to figure out what's causing it. It's like a period of trying to fight your unhappiness off, but your subconscious mind is like "Nah sis, you gon' stay in this pissy ass mood TA-DAY!" Trust me, nothing is harder than trying to be productive, or even look presentable when you just don't feel up to it. That's why I wanted to set you all up for success and say: Funk Off! If you let the funk linger, that's when it becomes a serious problem – it evolves from an ongoing mood to the story of your life. Before you know it, you're just permanently miserable and not doing anything about it. Ain't nobody got time for that, boo.

With that being said, I brought you guys 3 simple things you can implement to your lives to help you get out the funk and STAY out the funk.

1. Get up and Slay

It's no secret that when you look better, you feel better. Unfortunately, when we feel down, we use that as an excuse to stay in bed all day, neglect our self care, and creep out to the kitchen for unhealthy snacks in sweats and a t-shirt that's 3 sizes too big. Your roommates ask you why you look like shit or haven't showered, and your ego responds "BECAUSE I'M DEPRESSED!" No, boo. You're not depressed, you're just in a bad mood, and that's never an excuse to stop your life from blooming. This gotta stop! A sure fire way to lift your spirits is by getting up early and getting cute. Do your skin care routine, style your hair, pick a cute/comfy outfit and trick your mind into a good mood. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten up feeling like shit, decided to get dressed up, and ended up feeling 10x better. I wasn't in the best mood last Friday. I had a bad week and was annoyed at myself for letting it happen. Instead of lamenting, I got dressed in this little cute, but comfy two piece set, paired with my fave kicks and got out the house. The best thing you can do is get up and go somewhere in an outfit that you feel cute and comfortable in! It's an instant confidence + mood booster.

2. Give Thanks

Gratitude is king! I used to get so caught up complaining about everything that was wrong that I forget to appreciate everything that was right. Everyone can choose to practice showing gratitude differently. Some people might pray more, while others may jot down things they're thankful for in a journal. It doesn't matter how you incorporate it into your day-to-day life – the important thing is to make sure it's present, period! It's also really important to practice gratitude not only when things go well, but when things don't go quite as planned too! When you receive that curve e-mail from the job you've been crossing your fingers for, be thankful that you're learning humility and patience instead of being upset that you didn't get the job. When you do this, you tend to stay in a better mood all the time and set the tone for your life. Remember, you may not be in control of what happens to you, but are in control of your reactions. Be thankful always, and you'll see a huge difference.

3. Gotta Plan it All

To be 100% honest with you, you won't ALWAYS know what you're going to do for every hour of every day. BUT, you can have an idea. I think some people are intimidated by the word plan. A plan is as simple as having daily routines to start your day, or a general idea of what you want to get done. You're probably wondering how the hell does having a plan help you to get out of a funk. Well, it's easier to throw away responsibility/productivity when you don't necessarily have anything to do. Before I started planning everything in my Happy Planner, my life was in legit shambles, and it just made me feel worse. A wise person once said, when we fall off a cliff, we keep falling and falling, waiting to hit the bottom (feel our worst), so we can start climbing back up again. Except in life, we never actually hit the bottom, we just keep falling indefinitely (stay in a funk). The only way to stop falling is by reaching out and grabbing for a rock (getting a grip of things). Having a plan is the easiest way to get a grip. Whether it's detailed day-to-day planning, or as simple as planning to have a cup of tea every morning or knowing what you're going to have for dinner. Either way, you'll have something to look forward to and you'll feel so much more accomplished when you did what you said you were gonna do. There's something about checking things off your to-do list that makes you feel amazing and very anti-funk!
